Airbnb is working to promote responsible tourism

It is established that both the accommodation and the rest of the city represent the guest's home, therefore they must be taken care of during the trip. It also encourages them to explore the neighborhoods and support local businesses, and when booking accommodation through Airbnb, to ask the host what their favorite places are and to get away from the most touristy areas.

Airbnb has joined programs implemented by some cities to promote sustainable and quality tourism, encouraging guests to respect community norms and treat their accommodations as their own home.

Currently, the platform collaborates with the city council of Seville, Spain, in the promotion of "Love Sevilla Back", an awareness campaign by the city authorities to promote sustainable and quality tourism.

Visitors arriving in Seville after booking a stay with a local host through Airbnb will receive information about the rules of conduct they must respect in the city, while Airbnb hosts have access to a guide to include in their accommodations and help promote sustainable tourism among their guests.

The measures included in the manual provided to visitors aim to raise awareness about the importance of respecting the local community and neighbors, and refer to measures aligned with the philosophy of the short-term rental platform.

Among these guidelines is the one that establishes that both the accommodation and the rest of the city represent the guest's home, therefore they must be cared for during the trip. It also encourages them to immerse themselves in the real Seville, explore the neighborhoods and support local businesses, and that when booking accommodation through Airbnb, they ask the host what their favorite places are and get out of the most touristy areas.

"In Spain, and in Seville in particular, hosts are essential to helping guests discover the area where they are staying, and this activity generates a significant economic impact," a statement from the platform says.

According to data from an internal survey of travelers and hosts on Airbnb, almost nine out of 10 hosts in Spain recommended that guests visit lesser-known places, and approximately half of the total spending by travelers took place in the neighborhood where they stayed.

“We are especially proud to collaborate again with the Seville City Council in promoting responsible tourism, after Seville hosts and travelers who stayed in the city received guides with tips for hosting or traveling more sustainably during the 2019 Christmas season. For us, it is essential to remind guests that when they travel, it is important to respect local residents and cities, no matter how far they are from home,” says Mónica Casañas, General Manager of Airbnb Marketing Services SL.

In its description of the company, Airbnb argues that traveling through its platform allows the economic benefits of tourism to reach the people and places that make it possible, stating that it has generated billions of dollars in revenue for hosts, mostly people who advertise the accommodations in which they live.

"We continue to invest in innovative solutions and tools that facilitate our collaboration with governments around the world to promote travel that benefits local communities.".

At the end of 2020, and in order to continue expanding and diversifying its efforts, Airbnb launched the Municipal Resource Center, a portal that helps local governments obtain data and ensure compliance with regulations on accommodation registration, the company explains.
