SANTO DOMINGO.- She had a normal life as a housewife who took care of household chores, while her husband worked to provide for her and her two young daughters.
But life dealt her an unfortunate blow that forced her to leave her "comfort zone" and embark on an unexpected journey, faced with the abandonment of her husband, who "surprisingly" decided to exchange his love for a "US visa", leaving her completely helpless with two minor children.
But like any invincible warrior, Crisanta Morel took out her reserve weapons, donned her armor, and went out into the streets in search of her survival. She has been in her domestic battle for 17 years, a job with which she has managed to support her household as a single mother, breaking winds and storms, and to whom we pay tribute on the occasion of commemorating this month the “International Women's Day”.
This noble woman leaves every morning at 6:00 AM from the remote sector of Los Guaricanos, in Santo Domingo East; to the National District, where she works in several homes during the week; sometimes returning home at night, as the traffic alone takes her up to two hours to travel.
Fearing destitution, she opted for working in different homes, a choice she says she made because it guarantees she won't be completely unemployed. She currently works in four homes, which she divides throughout the week, except for Tuesdays, which she prefers to keep free for medical appointments and other errands.
She dedicates her weekends to selling various goods, depending on the season: from natural coconut oil, yogurt, sausages, underwear, creams, cosmetics, she even experimented with a grocery store, but the lack of time to dedicate to it, led her to close its doors.
Honest to the core, with boundless solidarity, this hard worker is now reaping the consequences of almost two decades of uninterrupted physical exercise, and her ailments manifest themselves in spinal deviation and other aftereffects left by the labors of domestic work.
This woman from Cotuí is not slowing down at all, and every day she renews her strength to keep going. “Imagine, the doctor told me not to do anything strenuous, not to sweep or mop, but this is how I make a living and I can’t give it up,” explains the mother of Yamilet and Yelisa, who have already given her a new generation of three grandchildren.
In each of the homes where she works, the common element is that she has been there for more than ten years, which demonstrates her stability and the satisfaction of the families. “The people here are like family to me; they treat me as such, with absolute trust, great consideration, and excellent service,” she says.
And when we asked him the reasons for his low turnover, he attributed it to the fact that he performs his duties "with responsibility, high commitment, punctuality, and one thing is that I never miss work unless it's absolutely necessary. Wherever I work, they can always count on me, and if they need me for anything, I'm always available to help.".
