SANTO DOMINGO.-The Dominican Republic has 4,418,619 homes, of which 720,200 are unoccupied and 3,689,348 are occupied.
According to the X Census 2022 of the National Statistics Office (ONE), these data represent 83.7% of the total number of homes in the Dominican Republic.
This figure represents an increase of 27.97% (1,033,198) in housing, according to the Ninth National Population and Housing Census of 2010, which recorded 2,662,862 households.
The ONE explained that a dwelling is classified as unoccupied when at the time of registration it is not inhabited by people and that it could be for rent, for sale, or uninhabited.
In the case of collective housing, it refers to the structure used to house people subject to rules of coexistence and common behavior.
"That is, collective housing is intended to serve as habitual accommodation for people subject to administrative subordination and obliged to comply with rules of coexistence by virtue of being related by a public objective or some common personal interest, such as reasons of health, discipline, order, teaching, religion, work, accommodation or social assistance," it indicates.
A dwelling is classified as unoccupied if it is not inhabited by people at the time of registration.
Santo Domingo is the province with the largest number of homes and also the area with the largest number of unoccupied homes.
This province has a total of 1,105,316 homes, of which 170,143 are vacant. 934,478 homes are occupied.
Santiago ranks second nationally in both the number of homes and the number of vacant homes. This province has 452,590 homes, of which 75,581 are vacant and 374,097 are occupied.
After Santiago comes the National District, which has 418,392 homes: 54,613 are unoccupied and 363,153 are occupied.
These data reflect that, of the 720,200 unoccupied homes nationwide, 300,337 are distributed in these three districts.
Pedernales is the province with the fewest homes, with 12,017, of which 10,298 are occupied and 1,703 are vacant. Along with Pedernales, Independencia province also has the fewest homes; both are located in the southern region.
While in the province of La Vega there are 152,436 homes; in Puerto Plata, 124,053; in Espaillat, they register 81,602; in La Altagracia 170,732; Sánchez Ramírez, 57,067; in Monseñor Nouel, 67,597; in Duarte, 109,774.
In María Trinidad Sánchez, 56,920; in the Hermanas Mirabal province, 33,887; in Samaná, 41,550; in Dajabón, 25,165; in Monte Cristi, 44,979; in Santiago Rodríguez, 22,754; in Valverde there are 64,896 homes; in Peravia, 69,233; in San Cristóbal, 221,397; in San José de Ocoa, 25,777.
In Bahoruco, 32,987; in Barahona, 61,481; in Azua, 75,109; in San Juan, 81,574; in El Seibo, 34,784; in La Altagracia, 170,732; in La Romana, 95,496; in San Pedro de Macorís, 115,907; in Monte Plata, 71,929; and in Hato Mayor, 35,695 homes.
