Ukraine estimates that 80% of the homes in Mariupol have been destroyed

The Mariupol City Council has reported that the Russian Army has destroyed 80 percent of the city's homes during airstrikes since the start of the war, which began three weeks ago.

"The situation in Mariupol is critical (...) On average, between 50 and 100 bombs are dropped on the city every day," the City Council warned on its Telegram channel.

At this point, the local authority has indicated that, according to preliminary estimates, around 30 percent of the destroyed housing stock will not be able to be restored.

Furthermore, after 16 days of siege, it is estimated that more than 350,000 residents are still hiding in shelters and basements to protect themselves from the continuous bombardment by Russian forces, according to Ukrinform.

In this regard, the City Council has indicated that, in recent days, residents have fled the city for Berdiansk and Zaporizhzhia. In total, some 30,000 people have already left the city on their own.

Finally, city authorities have denounced this as the worst humanitarian catastrophe ever recorded in Mariupol, where nearly 2,190 inhabitants have already died.
