Residential electricity rates will rise 9% starting in July
Starting tomorrow, the government will adjust electricity rates again. The increase will be 9% for residential customers consuming up to 300 kWh and 7.6% for small businesses, which together represent approximately 80% of users regulated by electricity distribution companies. This measure is part of the gradual, quarterly phase-out of the electricity subsidy, with a target date of 2026.
Abinader says the country is safe for tourism, despite US report on Covid increase in the Dominican Republic
President Luis Abinader said the Dominican Republic is a safe country to travel to, despite the United States' warning to limit tourism to the territory due to the increase in Covid-19 cases. “Those statistics from the United States change every two months. Two months ago they changed our status; we were safer than being in the United States. With Covid, there has been a global resurgence, and these are things they are constantly changing,” the president said during a press conference on progress in citizen security.
Excel launches an investment fund with a 60-day term
Continuing its strategy of introducing attractive investment instruments to Dominican investors, Excel, an investment banking services firm, launched its Dynamic Open-End Investment Fund for short-term placements. The minimum investment required for this new fund is 20,000 pesos, with a 60-day term, making it the first in its category to offer this term.
Parlacen recommends raising awareness about green spaces
The Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) unanimously approved the initiative presented by Dominican Representative Silvia García regarding the expansion, care, and protection of green spaces. In its session in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, the region's democratic political body passed a resolution recommending that central, subnational, and municipal governments within the Central American Integration System (SICA) raise awareness about the environmental proposal, which is framed within the promotion of the sustainable use and management of the environment and natural resources.
Santo Domingo East looks to the sea once again
Santo Domingo has historically turned its back on the sea. This applies both to the National District and its renowned Malecón (seawall), as well as to the municipality of Santo DomingoEste, the fastest-growing and most populous in the country. Residents, ahead of their local authorities, began a few years ago to regularly frequent this wonderful natural space, allowing them to integrate the Caribbean Sea into their daily lives. Yesterday, President Luis Abinader received explanations from members of Ceiztur (the Center for Tourism Infrastructure), the Monumental Heritage Program of the Comprehensive Tourism and Urban Development Program for the Colonial City, and the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, regarding this project, which has already begun and will be completed in 2023. The project is ambitious: an investment of 600 million pesos for the improvement of five kilometers of coastline.
Cabo Rojo-Pedernales tourist load study delivered
Vice President Raquel Peña, in her capacity as acting Minister of the Environment, and Minister of Tourism David Collado received the results of the tourism carrying capacity studies conducted in Cabo Rojo and Bahía de las Águilas from Sigmund Freund, Executive Director of the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP). “These tourism carrying capacity studies for the Cabo Rojo-Pedernales Tourism Development Project and the Public Use Zone of the Bahía de las Águilas National Recreation Area demonstrate the commitment to sustainability made by the Pro-Pedernales Trust and the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships. This is the first time that comprehensive studies of this nature have been carried out for the development of a tourism hub in the country,” Freund stated during the presentation.
Government unveils new platform to combat crime
President Luis Abinader yesterday led the launch of a new platform called the Comprehensive Command, Control, and Management System (SIDMCO), which aims to reduce crime in the country and guarantee citizen security. The new SIDMCO platform is designed to generate, collect, and analyze information, replacing outdated models with new, technologically advanced police methods. Furthermore, it is a thematic platform that, through the integration of criminal records, various registries, and databases, processes, transmits, maps background information, and provides real-time data. It will also generate statistical results, allow for inquiries, and enable the identification of undocumented individuals, cell phones, vehicles, firearms, and other reported items. In the case of vehicles, license plate or chassis numbers can be used to detect if there are any outstanding reports against them.
Dominican Republic to host Regional Climate Week
The Dominican Republic will host the Latin America and Caribbean Regional Climate Week from July 18-22, an event that will bring together representatives from the public and private sectors, civil society, international agencies, and financial institutions. It aims to create synergies to promote and strengthen climate action and showcase best practices being developed at the regional level.
