The agreement will involve integrating tunnels, bridges, and overpasses into the monitoring system of the National Emergency and Security System 9-1-1.
SANTO DOMINGO.-The Ministries of the Presidency and of Public Works and Communications signed an agreement yesterday, Tuesday, that seeks to strengthen the security and supervision of critical infrastructure and strategic public spaces, through the Military and Police Commission (Comipol), with the integration of more than a thousand cameras that will increase the security of road infrastructure, through the 9-1-1 Video Surveillance Network.
The agreement was signed at the National Palace by the Minister of the Presidency and President of the National Council of 9-1-1, Joel Santos Echavarría; the Minister of Public Works, Deligne Ascención; and the Executive Director of the 9-1-1 System, Colonel Pilot Randolfo Rijo Gómez, who were accompanied by the Director of Comipol, Major General Rafael Vásquez Espínola.
Santos Echavarría emphasized that, through this coordinated work, the Government continues to make important efforts to improve the services offered to citizens, which aim to improve security in all aspects.

"This agreement focuses on different aspects of safety; we are talking about road safety, which is one of the issues that the Government must emphasize, and the implementation of these cameras in different spaces will help save more lives," he stated.
He argued that these high-value strategic assets must be properly maintained, in order to also collaborate with the Citizen Security Plan implemented by President Luis Abinader's administration, in the interest of providing a better service to society.
He highlighted the importance of this support, which will contribute to the integration of technological and operational capabilities with a clear and compelling objective: to improve the safety of our road infrastructure through the use of the 9-1-1 Video Surveillance Network and the integration of more than a thousand cameras that would result from the implementation of joint projects of the two institutions.
Minister Ascención explained the importance of signing the agreement, as it will strengthen road maintenance and safety in the country.
"This agreement will involve integrating global infrastructure, such as tunnels, bridges, and overpasses, into the monitoring system of the National Emergency and Security System 9-1-1, in order to guarantee the adequate security that these types of structures require," he said.
He stated that Comipol personnel would provide timely assistance from the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) to monitor any situation. He also thanked the Minister of the Presidency and the Director of the National Emergency and Security System 9-1-1 for implementing the agreement.
“The System will contribute to the use of technologies, with the goal of obtaining products focused on infrastructure analysis, traffic control and urban video surveillance,” Ascención said.
Rijo Gómez stated that this network will allow for real-time monitoring of all bridges, overpasses, highways, and tunnels. “We thank the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) for allowing us to work hand in hand with them on solving some of the problems that fall under our specific responsibility,” he said.
In April of this year, 9-1-1 installed 267 video surveillance cameras in the provinces of Montecristi, Dajabón, Valverde and Santiago Rodríguez, to continuously strengthen citizen security.
Meanwhile, in May, an agreement was signed between the Ministry of the Interior and Police, lottery bank executives, business leaders, and the National Police, through which more than 10,000 video surveillance cameras, located at different points throughout the country, will be interconnected to the 9-1-1 System, which will allow for continued increases in citizen security levels and continued efforts to combat organized crime.
