SANTO DOMINGO- President Luis Abinader presided over the signing ceremony yesterday, Tuesday, of a collaboration agreement between the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MMARN) and the Coalition for the Defense of Protected Areas, with the aim of optimizing current environmental policies in the country and other actions.
During the ceremony, held at the National Palace, the head of state stated that the signing of the agreement is carried out with the common goal of safeguarding protected areas, after highlighting that it also demonstrates citizen empowerment and the contributions to the country made by environmentalists.
“This is the best thing for all public institutions: that there always be oversight between the public sector and social sectors. That is always important; we want that social audit of government management,” said President Abinader.
He added that the agreement also seeks to improve the National System of Protected Areas (SINAP), stating that "this government, with the help of this coalition, will have a more efficient management.".
Abinader said that one of the important aspects of the agreement will be that differences can be overcome to protect and safeguard natural resources "for our children, granddaughters and grandsons, because without environmental sustainability there will be no true economic development.".
The agreement was signed by the Minister of the Environment, Miguel Ceara Hatton, while on behalf of the Coalition it was signed by Eleuterio Martínez, from the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic; Yolanda León, from Grupo Jaragua; and Editrudis Beltrán Crisóstomo, rector of the UASD representing the Environmental Commission of that academy.
Also signing were: Nelson Bautista, from the Green Action Foundation; Eduardo José Rafael Rodríguez Santana, from the Cibao Ecological Society (Soeci), among others.
