SANTO DOMINGO.– The launch of a platform for virtual complaints about certain police services was a promise made today by the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, in his second accountability report.
“We will proceed with the launch of the virtual complaints platform, to file complaints from anywhere in the country, without needing to go to a police station,” said the president.
He announced that certification for the pilot program for vehicle transfers will soon be available online from anywhere in the country. Each of these initiatives aims to improve access to justice and the services the police provide to the public.
Citizen Security
“My Safe Country”, a comprehensive citizen security strategy that began in Cristo Rey as a pilot program in mid-2021, has been extended to the La Puya de Arroyo Hondo, La Zurza and La Fe sectors of the National District.
The president also noted that the plan has been implemented in Santiago, Barahona, Oviedo (in Pedernales), La Romana and San Francisco de Macorís, reducing robberies by more than 70% in the latter province, according to the president.
“My Safe Country program has led to, for example, a 52% reduction in crime and a 72.7% reduction in assaults in San Francisco de Macorís,” Abinader stated in his speech.
He also stated that, as part of this strategy, motorcycle registrations have exceeded 400,000. Meanwhile, the Minister of the Interior and Police, Jesús “Chú” Vásquez, confirmed that 6,000 firearms have been recovered.
“As a result of all this work, the most recent survey by the firm Americas Barometer revealed that the perception of insecurity in the Dominican Republic went from 63% in 2019 to 48% in 2021,” the president added.
