SANTO DOMINGO.– The Pro-Pedernales Trust and the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP) established an inter-institutional collaboration agreement with the National Botanical Garden (JBN), Dr. Rafael M. Moscoso (JBN), so that this entity provides assistance, support and technical collaboration in the management and conservation actions of the endemic and native flora species existing in the Cabo Rojo area, where the Pedernales Tourism Development Project is being carried out.
The agreement was signed by the general manager of Fiduciaria Reservas, Andrés Van Der Horst, the executive director of DGAPP, Sigmund Freund, and the general director of JBN, Pedro Suárez, who expressed the importance of this commitment to work together to promote prevention and conservation policies that maintain the ecological balance of the area, the rational use of natural and cultural resources, and contribute to the sustainable development of the Enriquillo region of the country.
The agreement also includes advice from the JBN technicians, who will be responsible for training the staff provided by the Trust through courses and workshops that will have both theoretical and practical components; in addition, a nursery will be created for the production of seedlings of endemic and native species representative of the arid zone of Cabo Rojo-Pedernales.
In addition, a seed reserve will be created to allow the restoration of areas that may be affected during the construction of the Cabo Rojo-Pedernales Tourist Project or that have been impacted by human activities.
The agreement will have an indefinite duration, starting from the date of its signature, provided that the parties agree to the agreed terms.
About the Cabo Rojo-Pedernales project
The Pedernales, Cabo Rojo Tourism Development Project is designed to be carried out in four phases, over an average period of 10 years, with an estimated investment of US$2.245 billion.
The first phase stipulates an investment of US$1.3 billion for the construction of 4,700 rooms (which will become 12,000 rooms at the end of the project).
Eight hotels will begin operations during the opening of that first phase, for which the hotel chains Hilton, Marriott, Sunwing, Inclusive Collection part of World of Hyatt, Iberostar Group and Karisma Hotels & Resort have already signed a letter of commitment to begin construction of their hotels.
In this first phase, an international airport will also be built in Pedernales, a shopping center, and all the necessary basic infrastructure works will be completed, such as the construction of an aqueduct, a water treatment plant, and an electrical transmission system.
The development of the project is under the responsibility of the Pro-Pedernales Trust and the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP), as the trustor of the Trust.
