SANTO DOMINGO.- Joel Santos Echavarría, Minister of the Presidency, announced yesterday that the Los Alcarrizos Cable Car, a cable transport system projected to serve 4,500 passengers per hour, will be launched on April 28th of this year.
He also explained that the project is currently in its final testing phase so that at 11:00 a.m. on opening day, it will begin to be part of the government's progress in public transportation.
"The government has become involved in urban and sustainable mobility projects to reduce people's travel times to their workplaces and other destinations in an economical and safe way; in addition to helping to decongest traffic, which translates into greater safety and quality of life," the official stated.
Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Cable Car is a cable transport system designed to provide the municipality of Los Alcarrizos with a public transportation service, improving internal mobility and connecting it to other modes of transport. The project is managed by the Executive Unit for the Redevelopment of Neighborhoods and Surrounding Areas (URBE).
Santos provided the information during his presentation as the keynote speaker at the American Chamber of Commerce's (Amchamdr) monthly luncheon. The official acknowledged that traffic in the capital city is complex because "everyone wants to get there quickly and be first.".
He assured that the problem could be solved with the incorporation of Metro Line 2C and the cable car, given that it will operate in one of the most populated sectors of Greater Santo Domingo.
The project
The Los Alcarrizos cable car will connect with the new Santo Domingo Metro line, helping citizens to travel more easily.
The project will have four stations, 160 cabins with a transport capacity for 4,500 passengers per hour; in addition, it will cover a distance of 4.20 kilometers in 15 minutes.
The project covers a 7.3-kilometer stretch and the construction of five stations that will be part of the Santo Domingo Metro-Cable Car Integrated Transportation System.
Likewise, the authorities of the Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (Opret) indicated that more than 2,000 direct jobs will be created, with an investment of 500 million dollars.
“This new extension of Line 2 will decongest traffic from Los Alcarrizos to Kilometer 9 (María Montez Station),” OPRET highlighted.
