SANTO DOMINGO.-The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) announced that it began repairs yesterday, Tuesday, on the Guayubín-Cruce de Copey highway in Montecristi province, which has suffered some damage due to recent rains in the area.
The information was provided by the Deputy Minister of Inspection and Supervision of the MOPC, Roberto Herrera, during a supervisory tour of the aforementioned road, accompanied by Nelsy Cruz,
provincial governor.
He explained that in just a small section, as a result of the downpours of recent months and the use of vehicles carrying agricultural products, some potholes have appeared that slow down vehicular traffic.
The road links the municipality of Guayubín with the Copey Crossing, which leads directly to the community of Pepillo Salcedo.
Herrera said that this section has shown some deterioration, and that it has been repaired several times, but that after the studies that have been ordered to be done in the area, the road will be repaired to definitively resolve this situation.
He emphasized the importance of the road solution for that highway, and that he had therefore received instructions from Minister Deligne Ascención for his immediate intervention.
“This project has a social and economic impact on the populations of the provinces of Santiago Rodríguez, Valverde, and Montecristi, and indirectly on the populations of Santiago and Dajabón, due to the commercial and productive ties that bind them. Hence the precise instructions from President Abinader and Minister Deligne Ascención for its immediate intervention,” he said.
The road benefits more than 550,000 inhabitants of the four border provinces, contributing to their economic growth.
“We are fulfilling our duties to supervise the projects. This time we are here on this road where we see that out of a length of 35.5 kilometers, there are four kilometers that are presenting some problems,” he stated.
He added that in this case the MOPC proceeded to do "what is established and what the procedures indicate, which is to withhold 5 percent from the contractor to cover these
eventualities.
"That is why we are instructing the contractors to immediately intervene on this road, as is being done right now," the official noted.
Herrera reported that two of the four kilometers will undergo significant work, including milling and removing all the asphalt to lay a new asphalt layer.
For her part, the provincial governor, Nelsy Cruz, said that from the first day the problems appeared on the road, the Minister of Public Works was informed, and that "he very promptly
instructed his immediate intervention."
