Public Works assures that the crack in the Máximo Gómez overpass at Nicolás de Ovando does not pose a danger to users

SANTO DOMINGO- The Ministry of Public Works and Communications reported that the crack in the asphalt on the Máximo Gómez Avenue overpass above Nicolás de Ovando Avenue was caused by a natural process, due to the fact that the expansion and contraction joint that acts as a dissipator was not built.

In an information note, the MOPC adds that the function of the joint is to expand or contract, depending on the temperature and the passage of vehicular traffic.

The diagnosis was made public after an evaluation carried out by the National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie).

The MOPC announced that the crack will be repaired, and that an expansion joint will be built at that point.

“In general, we urge the public to move about freely, as this overpass poses no danger to users,” said Lorenzo Herasme, Director of Overpass Maintenance.
