"These works, required for decades in this province of Sánchez Ramírez, are beginning and we are going to finish them all practically in 18 months," said the president.
COTUI, SANCHEZ RAMIREZ PROVINCE.– With a capacity for 1,400 students, on a plot of land covering more than 9,000 square meters and at a cost of RD$983 million pesos, President Luis Abinader yesterday led the start of construction work on the new campus of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), in this municipality.
Abinader was accompanied by the Minister of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED), Carlos Bonilla. The educational center includes an administrative building, an auditorium, 30 standard classrooms and 5 postgraduate classrooms, 3 laboratories, a sports field, and a library.
“Today, as public servants, we reaffirm that education is the foundation upon which a country's future is built. A trained young person is a social agent who contributes to the development of a nation. Therefore, this administration is committed to educating these young people and, in doing so, fulfilling the promise to build a better future for the Dominican Republic, as our President Luis Abinader has always stated,” Bonilla expressed at the opening ceremony.
With an investment of more than 983 million pesos, the new UASD campus will boost the economy in the Sánchez Ramírez province, generating around 600 direct jobs.
Abinader stated that the UASD centers are being taken to different parts of the country, such as the province of Azua, San Cristóbal, Baní, Bahoruco, Hato Mayor, Santiago Rodríguez, among other locations.
“These works, required for decades in this province of Sánchez Ramírez, are beginning and we are going to finish them all practically in 18 months,” said the president.
He said that approximately 3,500 to 5,000 students travel from the Sánchez Ramírez province, especially from Cotuí to San Francisco de Macorís, to receive instruction.
Community members in the area enthusiastically expressed their gratitude that the construction of the new UASD will soon become a reality, which directly contributes to the educational development of the province.
According to Wolfran Moreno Meléndez, a Social Sciences student, in terms of growth and development this center will bring renown to the municipality and the province of Sánchez Ramírez; he also highlighted that, with its construction, the professional population of this locality will grow positively.
“I think it’s very good that the authorities have taken Cotuí into account; I believe it’s an excellent step for President Luis Abinader’s administration,” said the 23-year-old.
In that regard, the senator for the province, Ricardo Santos, gave an overview of all the works that have been developed by the government of President Abinader and that in the years since the province was established, it had never seen so many achievements as in the current administration.
Also present in the delegation were José Ignacio Paliza, Administrative Minister of the Presidency; Franklin García Fermín, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology; Rafael Jesús Feliz, Minister of Youth; Yadira Henríquez, Director of the Social Assistance Plan of the Presidency; Cristiana Rodríguez, Governor of the Sánchez Ramírez Province, among other authorities and community leaders.
