SANTO DOMINGO.-The Office for the Reorganization of Transportation (OPRET) reported yesterday, Friday, that to meet the growing demand of users, on July 9, 6 additional train cars will arrive in the country, which will double the capacity of its lines, and that 72 more have been contracted for incorporation into the system.
"On June 24, the first six railcars were shipped from the Port of Valencia. These will be part of the project to double the installed capacity. These new railcars will arrive in the country on July 9, and an additional six railcars will be received each month until the 72 orders are fulfilled," explained OPRET in a statement.
He explained that once the first 6 cars are received, they can be coupled to two similar trains and thus begin the process of expanding capacity on Metro Line 1, and that for this process the manufacturer will need 45 to 60 days.
"This activity will be repeated every month until all 72 acquired cars are received, with 6 cars being received per month, which will also require installation and commissioning," he added.
Record number of users
Furthermore, OPRET reported today that the Santo Domingo Metro-Cable Car Integrated Transportation System has reached a total of 104,003,341 users from May 2022 to May 2023, compared to 96,851,921 users during the 2018-2019 period (pre-pandemic). This represents an increase of 10.72%.
March 2023 was the month with the highest number of passengers, reaching a total of 10,045,121 users, compared to 9,338,178 users in March 2019.
