Experts warn about taxes on digital services
Osvaldo Larancuent, president of the Internet Society, Dominican Republic Chapter, and Juan Medina, a technologist in the country, stated that the regulations currently under public comment for taxing various digital services contain some ambiguities that perhaps should be clarified. "First of all, we're talking about a value-added tax. That is, it's an indirect tax paid by the consumer. However, the press and various media outlets have reported that it's a tax that the company will pay directly," Larancuent stated while participating alongside Medina in the program "Despierta con CDN.".
DGII would create an office to defend taxpayers
The proposed amendment to the Dominican Tax Code includes the creation of a national taxpayer rights office, whose purpose would be to defend those who comply with their tax obligations. It would be similar to the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor) or the Office of User Services and Protection (Prousuario) of the Superintendency of Banks (SB), explained Yorlin Vásquez, Deputy Legal Director of the General Directorate of Internal Taxes (DGII).
