Through an alliance between the Government and the private sector, works have been carried out to create the necessary conditions for tourism expansion
SANTO DOMINGO. The tourist destination of Miches, in the province of El Seibo, is accelerating its transformation with new hotel investments, basic works and road projects that seek to position it among the main emerging tourist centers of the East.
President Luis Abinader explained during his appearance on LA Agenda Semanal that the tourism expansion that started from Verón-Punta Cana towards the west and northwest also reached Miches, where for years the lack of roads, drinking water and electricity limited the arrival of new investments.
Miches adds 6,000 hotel rooms
Through a partnership between the government and the private sector, projects have been undertaken to create the necessary conditions for tourism expansion. These include an aqueduct, new roads, and a hospital, currently under construction.
Abinader highlighted that Miches went from having only one hotel establishment, the Club Med, to adding some 3,000 new rooms, while another 3,000 are under construction.
The president noted that this growth makes Miches a new tourist hub in the East, with its own dynamic that complements the expansion of Verón-Punta Cana and Nisibón, in the province of La Altagracia.
Talent development for the hotel industry
The growth of tourism has also boosted worker training in El Seibo. The government has incorporated Infotep and UAS into the province to train personnel who can join the hotel industry and meet the labor demands that the new establishments will generate.
Abinader considered that this transformation represents an opportunity for El Seibo, a province that has historically registered high levels of poverty in the eastern region.
Port Samaná expands its cruise offerings
Another project that seeks to boost tourism in the region is Port Samaná, whose first stage is scheduled to open on November 24 and will function as a theme park linked to cruise tourism.
The initiative will generate around 800 direct and indirect jobs and has an investment of US$40 million financed by Banreservas.
Authorities also highlighted the transformation of the Samaná waterfront, where a new seawall is being built which, in addition to renewing the urban environment, serves a protective function in sectors that are below sea level.
The project includes an amphitheater and plans to later build a marina, which will expand recreational and nautical options for residents and visitors.
The 103-kilometer highway will connect tourism and production
The Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, highlighted the construction of a 103-kilometer that will connect different points of El Seibo with Cotuí and San Francisco de Macorís.
Two sections have already been opened, and the remaining sections are scheduled for completion by the end of the year. The road will facilitate travel between these towns and allow agricultural producers from different provinces to transport their goods to hotels and tourist establishments in the East.
Paliza explained that the project seeks to integrate tourist areas with productive territories, so that hotel growth also generates opportunities for the agricultural sector.
New roads expand tourist connections
The works being carried out in Miches and Samaná are part of a broader strategy to improve access to the main tourist destinations and link them with urban centers and production areas.
The plan includes works on the access roads to Cabo Rojo, Miches and Manzanillo, in addition to connectivity projects in the Northeast.
According to the authorities, these investments will create better conditions for attracting private capital, facilitating the movement of visitors and goods, and extending the economic benefits of tourism to other communities in the country.
