The general directorate of the National Office of Seismic Evaluation and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie) and the provincial government of Azua de Compostela, announced that they will work in a coordinated manner to evaluate and promote the reduction of seismic vulnerability in buildings, infrastructure and vital lines, in Azua, in the south of the country.
The action aims to ensure that more than 236,478 inhabitants of the province can know with certainty whether public buildings are resistant and thus guarantee safety against the effects of a significant earthquake, according to a press release.
The work in this area began with a meeting between Governor María Minerva Navarro and a technical team from the southern delegation, headed by its director, engineer Miguel López. Following this, an evaluation was conducted of the buildings housing the Governor's offices, the Jimena Fernández viuda Guzmán Library, and the Héctor J. Díaz Cultural Center.
“We appreciate Onesvie’s interest in evaluating and determining the seismic vulnerability of public buildings in our province of Azua. We are committed to ensuring that this process, which begins today, Tuesday, November 19, is applied to every building to guarantee the safety of our citizens,” the official stated.
In that regard, he committed to holding a meetingin January 2025 with representatives from different institutions to empower them regarding the evaluation actions to be carried out and the services offered by Onesvie to reduce seismic vulnerability.
Miguel López, representing the general management of Onesvie, guaranteed that all buildings, infrastructure, and vital infrastructure in Azua and its municipalities will be evaluated. He stated that the agency has a team of engineering and architecture professionals experienced in the evaluation techniques used.
