Scaffolding is a tool used for construction and working at heights. In ancient times, construction projects required structures to lift heavy materials via ramps, as seen, for example, in the Egyptian pyramids around 2500 BC. The development of scaffolding in China arose from the need to build barricades during armed conflicts.
Scaffolding built up until the 20th century was primarily made of wood, a lightweight material that was eventually replaced by aluminum. Scaffolding has undergone various changes and improvements over time; formerly, all scaffolding was made of wood, and even today, in the East, scaffolding made of wood and bamboo is still used.

Starting in the 20th century, steel became the main material and lately lighter scaffolds are manufactured using aluminum; tubular scaffolds have become the most widely used worldwide and have been the baseline for a long time.
Modern scaffolding manufacturing and assembly techniques allow for the creation of enormous auxiliary structures, equipped with all kinds of devices that enable operators to work safely.
Their use allows workers access to various points of a construction site or during maintenance, in civil works, remodeling, painting, and other projects. Scaffolding is essential in all construction projects, whether they involve houses, buildings, tanks, shopping centers, bridges, and many others.
Scaffolding towers can reach up to 25 meters; however, careful calculations must be made of their resistance to the various applied loads, and they must also offer safety and total stability.
The purpose of scaffolding is to provide a safe workspace with adequate access for the tasks to be performed. Throughout history, its design has undergone various changes and developments to improve its safety and functionality. Currently, some scaffolds utilize wheels for movement, adjustable steel supports, adjustable bases for leveling, and systems for securing them to the work structure.
The widespread use of scaffolding led to the creation of government regulations aimed at ensuring the safety of workers.
Types of scaffolding
There are different types of scaffolding, which are distinguished by their characteristics, such as their materials, which can include galvanized steel, fiberglass, metal, steel, or aluminum, generally all made of resistant materials. Another important variable is height; you'll find scaffolding to reach heights from 2 meters to 30 meters, depending on the complexity of the work to be done.
Easel type:
These scaffolds are simple structures, easy to assemble and do not reach great heights; they consist of 2 trestles and their respective platform, and are usually used for indoor work at reduced heights, for activities such as maintenance, painting or repairs.
Cross-braced or traditional:
Scaffolding with a metal cross-brace structure, named for the cross formed by the scissor-like joints in each section, is the well-known traditional scaffolding. These platforms are the most popular for both indoor and outdoor work, and come in varying heights, commonly used for facade work.
They are modular, easy to assemble and versatile, however they do not comply with any regulations for safe work at heights, since their structure does not have the appropriate safety components, making them unsuitable and unsafe to work with.
These machines lack safety railings and platforms, and are generally made of planks that can become unstable, causing accidents. Furthermore, they do not adapt to uneven terrain because they lack leveling mechanisms. For all these reasons, it is unwise to work with this type of equipment because it does not guarantee the safety of workers, violates regulations, and exposes them to substantial fines in the event of accidents.
Europeans:
European scaffolding systems are also modular structures, but unlike cross-bracing, they meet the safety requirements established by European international standards. For this reason, they can be used at greater heights and for more complex tasks, and they also have certification guaranteeing their stability and strength, as their components include horizontal and diagonal braces that ensure the framework's rigidity.
Electric or with self-elevating platform:
Electric or self-elevating platform scaffolding are electrically operated access systems for heights, they have a self-elevating platform operated from a control panel, they are usually used for outdoor access to great heights, in maintenance or repairs, generally for short duration work.
Pendants:
They are a type of mobile scaffolding that descends from heights and whose operator adjusts the working height, either manually or through an electric system. They can be suspended from suspension beams, ceilings, or rooftops, and are usually used at great heights exceeding 20 meters, when the use of modular scaffolding is too expensive or the work area does not allow it. They are commonly used for the maintenance of building facades, and like other types of scaffolding, they must be operated by qualified personnel.
Multidirectional:
These are modular access systems for working at heights with great versatility and resistance, since they are composed of different elements with standardized measurements, which meet certain characteristics that give the user the possibility to adapt their use according to the needs and conditions of working at heights.
Additionally, this type of scaffolding has a certification that guarantees compliance with international and national regulations, its design allows for height adjustment in 50 cm increments, and it also has, according to the manufacturer, different dimensions that can be combined, facilitating variability in operation both vertically and horizontally.
It's common to think of multidirectional scaffolding as simply basic structures for safe access and work at heights; however, the functionalities of multidirectional scaffolding are quite varied. Due to their versatility and modular design, they can be adapted to diverse requirements, always maintaining a high level of safety and quality.
Being a modular and multidirectional scaffold, it covers a wide range of possibilities and maneuverability in its assembly, allowing the construction of different structures that are adapted according to the user's needs.
