SANTO DOMINGO.– Approximately 45 kilometers of paved streets, as well as completed sidewalks and curbs, with an investment that, according to the government, exceeds RD$600 million, were inaugurated this weekend in Santo Domingo East.
President Luis Abinader, accompanied by the Minister of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), Deligne Ascención, led the inaugural ceremony for the construction and reconstruction of streets, sidewalks and curbs.
Ascención said that in that district, 413 kilometers of streets, sidewalks, and curbs have been repaired. “It is likely that an equal or greater amount remains to be repaired than what we have already repaired, but much less is needed, and we are planning for the first quarter, in coordination, an intervention of about 125 km for January-April of new streets that will be impacted with this program that we are doing.”.
He stated that the neighborhoods of Nueva Jerusalén, the Fernández urbanization in the Eastern zone, the Paco I and Paco II urbanizations, El Ozama and Alma Rosa I were fully intervened.
“These works that are being carried out are part of the circuit of interventions that the MOPC is doing in this municipality of Santo Domingo Este and that very specifically this and everything that has been described about the streets that have been mentioned are part of the resources that with the execution of the works of the expansion of the colonel Tomas Fernandez Dominguez avenue, it was possible to reduce the budget of that intervention and with the remaining funds this important intervention has been carried out,” he explained.

In the Fernández, Paco I and II urbanization, the reconstruction of just over 13 kilometers of roads, with a width of 6 meters, also includes the readjustment and asphalting of the parking lot of the San Isidro air base and of the adjacent and access streets.
“Many of the streets in the Nueva Jerusalén sector have had to be completely rebuilt, including earthworks, creating the base and sub-base of their structure, paving, and in many cases building sidewalks, curbs, drains, and speed bumps,” he said.
He explained that the investment in these sectors amounts to about 285 million pesos and was carried out by the company COGUSA, which is chaired by the contractor Eng. Rafael Guzmán.
Meanwhile, in Alma Rosa I and Ensanche Ozama, 32 kilometers of the main streets of these sectors were resurfaced and restored.
The investment made has been 315 million pesos, developed through contracts signed by the Ministry of Public Works and Communications with high-level compliance contractors, such as the construction companies Caliche, Rizek and JSYD.
“These works include tasks such as cleaning the areas to be intervened, resurfacing existing structures, laying hot asphalt concrete, improving specific drainage points and horizontal and vertical signage,” he added.
He noted that these works are part of the massive plan for paving and building sidewalks and curbs that the MOPC is carrying out in Greater Santo Domingo, where hundreds of neighborhoods and urbanizations lack the most basic road infrastructure works that modern cities should have.
