Housing Construction Begins: Government Delivers 500 Apartments in Ciudad Modelo

Government delivers 500 apartments in Ciudad Modelo

SANTO DOMINGO - With an extension of 123,000 square meters, the Government yesterday delivered 500 apartments of the Mi Vivienda Ciudad Modelo project, in Santo Domingo Norte, out of a total of 1,760 units that the project includes, of which 1,496 homes are three bedrooms and 264 are two bedrooms.

The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, and the Minister of Housing and Buildings (MIVED), Carlos Bonilla, delivered the first units, whose urban development has a playground, basketball court, parking for vehicles and motorcycles, in addition to a large green area expanded over 15,784 meters.

The total investment amounts to 4,565 million pesos, positively impacting the economy of the area and boosting the construction sector in that district, where it has already generated more than 3,900 direct and indirect jobs.

During the event, President Luis Abinader commented that one of the major challenges facing the country is to definitively end the housing deficit that has accumulated for decades in the Dominican Republic.

“This is a deficit we inherited from previous administrations, which did not do enough to comply with the constitutional mandate that recognizes the right of Dominicans to decent housing and that outlines the role the State must play in making that right effective,” Abinader explained.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the government's role is to give immediate and special attention to the issue of housing; taking the necessary steps to create a national strategy for the improvement and construction of new homes throughout the country, as part of the public policies developed by the government through MIVED.

About My Home

Mi Vivienda Ciudad Modelo is part of the Mi Vivienda housing plan promoted by the central government. To date, MIVED has delivered 1,060 apartments under this program, distributed throughout Greater Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros.

“This project, once again, demonstrates the great commitment of our institution and our team, as we are delivering the first 500 apartments in a record time of 13 months, Bonilla stated.

In addition to Ciudad Modelo, in Greater Santo Domingo, MIVED is building housing projects in Hato Nuevo and San Luis; while in the North Zone, the La Barranquita and Los Salados projects are underway.

Raquelina Vasquez, a teacher at a local school and mother of three teenagers, was one of the beneficiaries who today became a homeowner. She expressed her gratitude, saying, "Words cannot describe my happiness. I feel like I'm at a very special moment in my life. I've spent years paying rent without any hope of owning my own home until today.".

Samuel Pereyra, Administrator of Banco del Reservas, highlighted the advantages of the attractive interest rate of 8 percent, fixed for 6 years, "much lower than those currently prevailing in the private market, which rise to approximately 14% for one year.".

The Vargas and Martínez Adames families received the keys on behalf of the beneficiaries.

Present at the event, along with President Abinader and Minister Bonilla, were officials from the province of Santo Domingo: Antonio Taveras Guzmán, senator of the province; Betty Gerónimo and Lucrecia Santana, deputies; Julia Drullard, governor; among other government representatives.
