SANTO DOMINGO.- President Luis Abinader issued a decree creating a special commission to oversee the proper use of funds from the renewed and reformed concession contract for the José Francisco Peña Gómez, Gregorio Luperón, Juan Bosch, Joaquín Balaguer, and María Montez international airports, as well as the Arroyo Barril domestic airport.
The commission, chaired by Ricardo Francisco Tadeo Canalda Carvajal, will be functionally dependent on the President of the Republic and administratively attached to the Ministry of the Presidency. It was created by decree number 70-24.
A press release from the Presidency indicates that the commission's main responsibility will be to access financial information related to the use of funds that the Dominican State receives as consideration for the aforementioned concession contract.
"This initiative reflects President Abinader's government's commitment to transparency and the efficient use of public resources," the press release highlights.
The commission, made up of prominent figures such as Julio Maximiliano Suero Marranzini and Circe Minnet Almánzar Melgen, among others, will work without prejudice to the constitutional and legal provisions relating to internal and external controls of public funds.
As an additional transparency measure, the commission will submit quarterly reports to the Executive Branch on the progress of investing the resources derived from the concession agreement. Furthermore, the institutional cooperation required from the entities and bodies of the Executive Branch to provide the necessary information is emphasized.
The Commission, exercising its functions on an honorary basis, will cease to exist when all the funds received by the Dominican State, derived from the contract in question, have been invested in the public works planned by the Executive Branch.
The aforementioned Decree was signed on February 5, 2024.
