SANTO DOMINGO- The recently inaugurated Cabo Rojo pier in Pedernales, whose first phase was inaugurated just a month ago, on January 4, 2024, shows damage, according to a video that circulated yesterday, Wednesday, February 7, on social media and which was responded to by the project authorities who assure that the infrastructure remains unaltered.
"The images in the video circulating on social media show a landslide of temporary construction material between the pier and the cape, due to the intense southerly winds impacting the Caribbean Sea with unusual swells, which caused the outer layer of the temporary material to wash away," explains a statement dated yesterday and stamped by Port Cabo Rojo.
The Royal Spanish Academy defines a landslide as the fall of rocks or earth from a hillside, slowly or quickly, that occurs during rainy seasons or due to an earthquake.
The statement assures that the dock's infrastructure is intact and has not suffered damage "because it meets the highest quality standards in the port industry.".
They specify that Port Cabo Rojo is still under construction in the second phase of the project and complies with current regulations.
The document further states that, once the weather phenomenon has passed, the work will restart and attention will be given to the reconfiguration of the fill and the execution of the protection wall between the dock and Cabo Rojo, "which will guarantee the stability of the fills and the infrastructure on land in a definitive way.".
Just one month
On January 4th of this year, President Luis Abinader inaugurated the first phase of the Cabo Rojo Port in Pedernales, which received the arrival of 2,555 tourists aboard the Norwegian Pearl ship, from the Norwegian Cruise line, simultaneously, representing the arrival of the first cruise passengers to the south of the country.
"Today marks the beginning of change across the entire region," the president declared, adding that "the so-called deep south will become a fertile ground for development and employment.".
The construction of “Port Cabo Rojo” involved a private investment of US$98 million.
