PUERTO PLATA.- Several homes and commercial establishments were reduced to ashes by a raging fire in a sector of the municipality of Sosúa.
The fire, which caused losses of more than one million pesos, took place in the area known as "La Policlínica" in Batey, Sosúa, where several families, mostly of Haitian nationality, were left with only the clothes they were wearing.
A heartbreaking scene unfolded at the site where timid plumes of smoke rose from the burnt wood of the destroyed homes, whose belongings were reduced to ashes, and miraculously, no one was injured.
With tears in his eyes, master builder Daniel Eladius Methielux, who has been legally residing in the country for 24 years, recounted that all his belongings, including his family's identity documents, were burned.
He explained that the fire occurred in the early hours of the morning when everyone was asleep and they barely escaped with their lives, losing their savings (cash), clothes, shoes, furniture and even their immigration permit card.
Likewise, the young woman Kelna Jean stated that she arrived in the country as a child and became literate here, where she started her family and to survive she had a small clothing and shoe store, which was devoured by the flames.
Bricklayer Charles Pierret said that this misfortune leaves them in a very difficult situation, since they lost even the food they had bought at the beginning of the current week for the traditional Christmas Eve dinner.

The communicator Wellington De Jesús Martinez reported that the rapid intervention of fire units from Sosúa, Puerto Plata Air Base, Montellano and Cabarete, extinguished the fire that is presumed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit.
