Draft economic measures begins its first test in Congress

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Senate of the Republic sent the bill on measures to promote economic growth, tax simplification and mitigation of the international crisis to a bicameral commission this Friday, with the aim of beginning its legislative study and analysis process.

The initiative is part of the package of measures announced yesterday by the Government to address the impact of the international situation, marked by rising oil prices, inflationary pressures and increased state spending on energy subsidies.

A bicameral commission will take over the study of the project

The commission will be chaired by Senator Pedro Manuel Catrín Bonilla of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), and will include the participation of ten legislators from both chambers of the National Congress.

During the Senate session this Friday, it was reported that the members will be duly summoned by the chairman of the committee to begin the evaluation work on the legislative proposal.

Legislators who are members of the commission

The bicameral commission was formed by the following congressmen:

  • Pedro Manuel Catrín Bonilla (president of the commission)
  • Andrés Guillermo Lama Pérez
  • Alexis Victoria Yeb
  • Ginette Altagracia Bournigal de Jiménez
  • Ramón Rogelio Genao
  • Félix Ramón Bautista Rosario
  • Lía Santana de Díaz
  • Aracelis Villanueva Figueroa
  • Edward Alexis Espíritu Santo Castillo
  • Moisés Ayala Pérez
  • Casimiro Antonio Marte

The formation of the legislative team seeks to guarantee a joint review between the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies before the project advances in the congressional approval process.

A proposal linked to the international situation

The bill includes measures aimed at stimulating economic growth, simplifying tax procedures, and generating resources to address the impact of the international crisis on the Dominican economy.

Among the objectives set by the Government are strengthening macroeconomic stability, maintaining subsidies linked to the energy sector, and easing some administrative and fiscal burdens for certain productive sectors.

Start of the legislative process

With its referral to a bicameral committee, the bill formally enters a new stage of the legislative process. From now on, members of Congress must evaluate the bill's content, listen to technical opinions, and prepare a report that will later be presented to both chambers for discussion and possible approval.
