SANTO DOMINGO –As predicted by previous polls conducted in the country to measure electoral preference, President Luis Abinader has secured a second term. According to the Central Electoral Board's update this morning, the candidate of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), who will retain his position as the Dominican Republic's leader, is the projected winner of the election with 57.74% of the vote, with 94.52% of polling stations reporting and only 1,004 remaining.
Meanwhile, the candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Abel Martínez, obtained 10.21% of the votes cast, with 422,301 votes, while Leonel Fernández, of the People's Force, achieved 29.33%, with 1,213,518 votes, as of the publication of this edition of El Inmobiliario.
Miguel Vargas, candidate of the Dominican Revolutionary Party, had 0.45%; María Teresa Cabrera of the Broad Front 0.14%; Fulgencio Severino, of Homeland for All, 0.06%; Carlos Peña, of Generation of Servants, 0.73%; Virginia Antares, of Democratic Option, 0.57% and Roque the Collector, 1.33%.
Given these results, the People's Force consolidates its position as the second largest political force in the country, and the PLD, in third place.
Reaction:
In delivering his victory speech, President Luis Abinader reiterated that he will promote a constitutional reform to prevent the continuity of power from depending on the personal whim of the president in office, while also stating that he will not run again as a presidential candidate.
Abinader indicated that the elections will mark a turning point in the institutional framework, and therefore said he hopes that the reform he will promote in his second term will be the last one made to the constitution.
“I will not run for office again, that is my word, that is my commitment and it will be part of my legacy to the Dominican Republic,” Abinader said at the campaign headquarters of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).
The president stated that the Dominican people "want to continue deepening the change" and emphasized that he accepts the trust placed in him and will not fail the citizens of his country.
“The Dominican Republic has today issued a vote of confidence with its sights set on the future.
The message from the ballot box is clear: the changes we have made are irreversible; there is no going back. The Dominican Republic has changed, and it has changed forever,” the president stated.
He thanked presidential candidates Abel Martínez and Leonel Fernández for contacting him to congratulate him on his victory in Sunday's elections.
“I accept the trust I have been given and the obligation not to betray it. I will not let you down! And above any partisan sentiment is my loyalty and pride, and my commitment is to the Dominican people,” the president and political leader stated.
The president, who was accompanied by his wife Raquel Arbaje, Vice President Raquel Peña, José Ignacio Paliza and high-ranking leaders of the PRM, congratulated all the winners, senators, deputies, regardless of party, stating that it is part of democracy and what they want is to serve the people.
Jáquez calls process transparent.
The president of the Central Electoral Board, Román Jáquez Liranzo, highlighted the participation and democratic joy of the Dominican people, demonstrated in the 18,292 polling stations, exercising their right to vote in an orderly manner.
