Dominican Republic strengthens regional banking sector leadership

SANTO DOMINGO– Through the Dominican Republic's Multiple Banking Association (ABA), the country has strengthened its leadership in the regional banking sector with the appointment of several of its executives to the board of specialized committees in the Latin American Banking Federation (Felaban), achievements that imply not only a projection of the nation and the Dominican banking sector, but also the development of initiatives in favor of best practices.

The ABA reported that during two meetings held in the last half of this year, Manuel González Martínez, ABA's technical director, was elected vice president of the Latin American Risk Committee (CLAR). Meanwhile, Dalma Hernández Florián, manager of Social Banking and Interinstitutional Relations, was elected president of the Sustainable and Inclusive Banking Committee, both for the 2024-2026 term.

González Martínez explained that the Risk Committee conducts consultations and exchanges of knowledge on the banking and financial landscape of the region and the risks related to the investment portfolio, IFRS standards, delinquency, fair value, as well as payment systems and the security of its operations.

For his part, Hernández explained that the Sustainable and Inclusive Banking Committee is responsible for promoting sustainability and inclusive financing practices, initiatives, and strategies within the banking sector in Latin America, developing alliances to encourage the implementation of policies related to this topic, and incentivizing the production of documents for the adoption of sustainable practices.

The ABA noted that Lidia Ureña, Senior Manager of Regulation, chairs the Latin American Committee for the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing (COPLAFT) and reported that she was recently chosen as Vice President of the Latin American Trust Committee (COLAFI), both positions for the 2024-2026 term.

In a press release, the Banking Association stated that its executive president, Rosanna Ruiz, concluded last November a two-year term as vice president of Felaban, an organization made up of some twenty banking associations and federations in Latin America.

"For the ABA, it is an honor and a great responsibility to occupy these management positions in specialized bodies of regional banking and, at the same time, it represents a demonstration of the strength and proactivity of the Dominican multiple banking sector, which is being taken into account for these positions," Ruiz stated.

He pointed out that these designations entail a country commitment that involves hosting the Latin American Congress on Sustainable and Inclusive Banking and the II Latin American Congress on Development and Human Talent (CLADE), both in 2025, and the Latin American Congress on Risk, planned for 2026, events that put the Dominican Republic in the center of attention at the regional level.
