SANTO DOMINGO.-The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) reported Friday night that the debris that fell in the 27 de Febrero tunnel hours earlier was due to a vehicle hitting one of the ventilation shafts or ducts located on the Boulevard of the same name.
The state entity maintained that, when it was destroyed "to guarantee safety, to avoid misfortunes, it caused some fragments to fall inside the tunnel.".
The Ministry of Public Works stated that the pieces or fragments do not affect the tunnel. "That said, the fragments, resulting from the accident in the upper area of the Boulevard, do not structurally affect the tunnel," the Ministry posted on its Instagram account.
He said that the alert about falling debris was reported by 9-1-1, which prompted high-level technicians from the entity to assess the situation, verifying that it did not represent a danger to traffic or users, "so it was not considered necessary to close the road.".
He added that maintenance crews were removing the debris, and would then allow traffic to resume normally.
