Construction Begins: Nearly 90% of complaints regarding housing price increases...

Pro Consumidor assures that nearly 90% of claims regarding increases in housing prices have been settled

“The decisions made on these cases have been well reasoned, in which the interests of the purchasers of these properties have been defended and the rights of the construction sector have been preserved.”.

SANTO DOMINGO.-  Nearly 90% of the resolutions issued by Pro Consumidor regarding claims for increases in housing prices have been settled between the construction sector and the buyers or consumers, declared the executive director of the government agency, Eddy Alcántara, yesterday.

He stated that the entity has resolved more than 500 cases of conflicts arising between construction companies and home buyers, and that the decisions made regarding these conflicts have been through reasoned agreements that favor the interests of consumers, "without harming the rights of the construction sector.".

He explained that most of the cases decided have to do with complaints filed by home buyers due to price increases by construction companies.

“The decisions made on these cases have been well reasoned, defending the interests of the purchasers of these properties and preserving the rights of the construction sector,” he added.

Alcántara maintained that the situation has generated tranquility among consumers or home buyers who have made their claims at this institution.

In that regard, the head of Pro Consumidor urged citizens who have conflicts of this nature and feel that their rights have been affected to go to that entity "so that a fair application of the rules is guaranteed, in accordance with the contracts signed between the parties.".

“We urge homebuyers experiencing this problem to contact Pro Consumidor, where we are providing answers to all these real estate cases,” he insisted.

He reiterated that with these resolutions issued by that institution, the aim has been to act in accordance with the law, "always guaranteeing the rights of consumers and also understanding that it is necessary to preserve the importance of the country's productive sectors.".

The director of the consumer protection agency guaranteed a solution to all cases that generate a situation of confrontation between suppliers (construction companies) and consumers (buyers) of homes under construction, making use of the Constitution of the Republic, Law 358-05 and other sectoral laws of the Dominican Republic.

“Every person has the right to have access to quality goods and services, to objective, truthful and timely information on the content and characteristics of the products and services they use or consume, under the provisions and rules established by law, as established in Article 53 of the Constitution,” he added.

He also recalled that since July 18, the process of issuing and notifying resolutions to people who have filed claims against suppliers for increases in the price of properties originally contracted has begun.

Finally, the official noted that this measure was taken from that date due to frequent complaints from citizens regarding the often disproportionate increases in the cost of housing established by contract.
