SANTO DOMINGO- According to statistics from the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), July was the best month for hotel occupancy in the Dominican Republic this year, reaching a percentage of 76.1%.
From January to September, according to the records of the government entity, February is the second month with visitor presence, reaching 75.4%, followed by August with 74.5%.
Hotel occupancy was reported at 73.8% during the month of April, 72.2% in March, 71% in January, 70.4% in June, 67.3% in May, while September registered 60%.
By zones
In Bávaro-Punta Cana, occupancy reached 82.9% in July, making it the best month of the year, while September was the lowest at 63.6%; Boca Chica-Juan Dolio had its best month in January with 72.1% and its lowest in June with 49%.
In Greater Santo Domingo, the best month for hotels in 2022 was March, achieving 65.3% occupancy, while June had the fewest visitors with 57.3%. The tourist area of Puerto Plata had its best months in March and April, both reaching 57.8% occupancy, while the biggest drop was in May with 38.3%.
In La Romana-Bayahibe, February and August are almost on par with 88.3% and 88.1%, respectively, with September being the month with the lowest figures at 79.8%; the months of February and August in Samaná obtained almost the same occupancy with 67.3% and 67.5%, respectively, with September being the least occupied month at 50.4%.
In the case of Sosúa-Cabarete, the report indicates that February emerged as the best month for hotels in that area, achieving 76.1% of visitors, while May dropped to 33.3%, making it the month with the lowest occupancy.
September and Fiona
The disruptions caused by Hurricane Fiona, which made landfall in the Dominican Republic in the early hours of September 19, leaving countless damages, especially in the eastern tourist area, led more than 40,000 tourists to cancel their reservations due to the destruction the storm left in its wake.
The last month that Mitur records in its records is precisely September, where the best occupancy was achieved by La Romana-Bayahibe with 79.8%, followed by Bávaro-Punta Cana with 63.6%; Santiago 55.5%, Greater Santo Domingo 55.0%; Boca Chica-Juan Dolio 54.9%, Samaná 50.4%, Puerto Plata 38.8% and Sosua-Cabarete 37.8%.
