The agency warns that rain will continue due to the influence of a trough and forecasts moderate to heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in several areas of the country
SANTO DOMINGO.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) maintains 10 provinces and the National District on yellow alert, while seven others remain on green alert, due to the impact of a trough that will continue to generate rain over different areas of the Dominican Republic.
According to the bulletin from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), the country will continue to be under the influence of this atmospheric system and an abundant supply of moisture transported by the south/southeast wind, conditions that will favor rainfall from the morning hours.
The meteorological agency predicts that, during the afternoon, the rains will spread and intensify, with moderate to heavy downpours locally, thunderstorms and gusts of wind, especially in the southeast and northeast regions, as well as in the Central Mountain Range.
The areas under yellow alert are Greater Santo Domingo, the National District, Pedernales, Barahona, Bahoruco, Independencia, Azua, Peravia, San Cristóbal and San José de Ocoa.
Meanwhile, the provinces under green alert are Elías Piña, Dajabón, La Vega, Monte Plata, Monseñor Nouel, San Juan and Sánchez Ramírez.
Sea conditions and temperatures
On the Atlantic coast, Indomet recommends that fragile, small and medium-sized vessels navigate with caution near the coastal perimeter and avoid venturing out to sea due to abnormal swells.
It also urges people to take precautions on the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts due to reduced visibility caused by downpours, electrical discharges, gusts of wind and locally high waves.
Warm south/southeast winds will keep temperatures hot, with lows between 24°C and 26°C and highs of 32°C to 34°C.
Given these conditions, weather authorities recommend drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored, lightweight clothing, staying in cool, well-ventilated areas, and avoiding direct sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Children, pregnant women, and the elderly are more vulnerable to the effects of the heat.
COE recommends avoiding rivers and spas
Given the expected weather conditions, the COE urged the population to refrain from crossing rivers, streams, and ravines with high water levels, due to the risk of flooding.
He also recommended avoiding the use of spas in the provinces under alert and staying attentive to official bulletins and the guidance of civil protection agencies.
