Fire at oil factory in San Cristóbal lasts for more than five hours

Firefighters had the emergency under control, although they continued working to extinguish the flames and prevent them from spreading to other structures. No injuries had been reported as of midnight

SANTO DOMINGO.- A fire raged for more than five hours Sunday night at an oil factory located in the La Coquera sector, in Cambita Garabitos, San Cristóbal province, where several units of the Fire Department remained deployed to fight the fire and prevent it from spreading to other areas.

According to the San Cristóbal Fire Department, the incident was reported at 7:20 p.m. on the aforementioned day. However, after midnight, the fire remained under control, although it had not yet been completely extinguished.

Given this situation, the response teams continued their work at the facility to eliminate active fires and thus reduce the risk of the flames reaching nearby buildings.

Firefighters extend firefighting efforts

Rescue teams mobilized several units to the scene to fight the fire and prevent the incident from escalating.

The operations had to continue until the fire was completely extinguished. For this reason, the rescuers remained at the site throughout the night, focused on putting out the remaining hotspots.

The maneuvers were also aimed at preventing the fire from spreading to other areas of the plant or affecting nearby buildings. Meanwhile, personnel worked to reduce the risks associated with the emergency and prevent new outbreaks of fire.

Police and ambulances arrived at the scene

In addition to the firefighters, National Police officers and ambulances from the 9-1-1 National Emergency System arrived at the scene as part of the assistance and prevention operation deployed in response to the incident.

In this way, the authorities offered support during the operations and remained prepared for any eventuality that might arise while the tasks continued.

As of after midnight, no injuries had been reported, according to available information. However, work was still underway, so the operation had not yet been declared complete.

The factory is located on the Cambita road

The affected establishment, known as La Coquera, is located at kilometer four of the Cambita road, in the municipality of Cambita Garabitos.

Due to the duration of the incident, emergency units remained in the area for several hours on Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday, while trying to keep the flames contained and prevent them from spreading to other facilities.

In that sense, the continuation of the tasks after midnight responded to the need to extinguish the remaining hotspots and prevent further incidents from occurring on the premises.

Causes and material damages pending assessment

At the moment, authorities had not released details about the circumstances that caused the fire or determined what sparked the combustion.

Similarly, there was no definitive assessment of the damage suffered by the factory, so the material losses had not yet been quantified.
