COE increases to six the number of provinces on alert due to the effects of a trough

Maximum temperatures will range between 31°C and 35°C, with a heat index of up to 41°C; Indomet reported that a low-pressure system in the Atlantic does not pose a threat to the Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Emergency Operations Center (COE) increased to six the number of provinces under green alert due to the weather conditions expected for Wednesday afternoon, when the influence of a trough at various levels of the troposphere will favor the occurrence of downpours, thunderstorms and gusts of wind.

According to the bulletin from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet), south/southeast winds are maintaining hot conditions with little rainfall across most of the country. However, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected during the afternoon, accompanied by occasionally strong gusts of wind.

Six provinces under green alert

The localities placed under green alert are Santiago Rodríguez, Santiago, Dajabón, Puerto Plata, Valverde and Monte Cristi.

The preventative measure aims to ensure that residents of these areas remain attentive to the evolution of weather conditions and to bulletins issued by emergency agencies.

COE recommends avoiding rivers and spas

Given the possibility of flash floods and inundations, the COE recommended that the population refrain from crossing rivers, streams and ravines that have high volumes of water.

He also urged people not to use the resorts located in the provinces under alert, as a preventive measure against the possible effects of rain and rising water levels.

Feels like heat up to 41°C

Indomet reported that temperatures will continue to be high, with highs between 31°C and 35°C in much of the Dominican territory and a heat index that could reach between 38°C and 41°C.

Given these conditions, it is recommended to drink water frequently, wear light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, avoid direct sun exposure without proper protection between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and stay in cool, well-ventilated places.

Older adults, pregnant women, and children are more vulnerable to the effects of heat, so special attention should be paid to their hydration and well-being.

The low-pressure system does not pose a danger to the country

On the other hand, Indomet reported that a non-tropical low pressure area, with storm-force winds, is located east of the east coast of the United States.

The system is expected to move slowly east-northeast, with the possibility of acquiring subtropical characteristics over the next few days. The probability of cyclone formation is 40% in the next 48 hours and 40% in the next seven days.

However, the meteorological agency specified that this system does not pose a danger to the Dominican Republic.
