SANTO DOMINGO.- Today the Tenth Population and Housing Census ends with a significant and evident backlog in the provinces with the largest population in the country: Santo Domingo and the National District.
Census Director Victor Romero said yesterday that, in order to make progress, in some areas they are working double shifts, with a second enumerator continuing the count from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The ONE had extended the process by seven additional days, until today, November 30, due to delays caused by connectivity problems with hundreds of tablets. But the extra time has not been enough to complete the process in the capital, Santiago, and La Altagracia.
Romero explained that, so far, they do not plan to extend the Census for more days. “Of the remaining six provinces, they are finishing up to three; there are three that we have to see how we are going to complete between now and tomorrow,” Romero commented yesterday.
The ONE is also moving census takers from one site where the census has ended to another to reinforce areas.
The institution has also had to expedite its procedures to pay people who have stopped or slowed down production because they are demotivated and have not yet received their money.
According to Romero, data collection has been completed in 26 provinces. Technical work is underway there and is expected to be successfully completed this Wednesday.
