Abinader begins construction work on the Judicial City building in Santo Domingo Oeste

SANTO DOMINGO WEST.- President Luis Abinader launched the construction of the Santo Domingo West Judicial City building this Monday, which will benefit around one million citizens.

The project, with an investment of RD$1.852 billion, will impact residents of the municipalities of Santo Domingo Oeste, Los Alcarrizos and Pedro Brand with their respective municipal districts of Palmarejo-Villa Linda, Pantoja, La Cuaba and La Guáyiga.

This project, which will be carried out by the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED), headed by Carlos Bonilla, will divide into modules, in the same building, the Judicial Branch, the Public Ministry and the Public Defender's Office of that jurisdiction and other surrounding ones.

During the event, President Abinader stated that the project will improve services with modern facilities and that residents of Santo Domingo Oeste will no longer have to travel to the National District as they currently do.

The president emphasized that the judicial project aims to make the justice system more efficient and is part of the decentralization of public services taking place in Greater Santo Domingo and other parts of the country

"It is very important, when we have a population of 3.6 million inhabitants throughout Greater Santo Domingo, that we can efficiently provide services so that they do not have to travel to the center, which is the National District," he pointed out.

The head of state also announced that the Santo Domingo East Courthouse will be inaugurated between January and February 2024.

The governor added that this project will include the most important public facilities and buildings in this municipality.

The construction of the Santo Domingo West Judicial City includes the installation of 11 courtrooms, secretarial and forensic interview service centers, a digital lobby, virtual courtrooms, space for approximately 100 parking spaces, court secretarial offices, judges' offices, among others.

Wellness spaces for Dominicans

For his part, Minister Bonilla stated that the project responds to the commitment to create spaces of well-being for Dominicans.

“Today we are taking the first step in the construction of this project, which also reflects our commitment to creating spaces that guarantee the well-being of Dominicans. The justice system is essential in any society to protect people's rights, and it is a public service that must be provided under the best conditions, with efficient service and first-class infrastructure.”.

The Judicial City of Santo Domingo West will benefit the Dominican justice system by allowing citizens of that municipality greater convenience, saving time and resources, as it avoids their having to travel to other locations.

Meanwhile, the president of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ), Luis Henry Molina Peña, expressed that the work will represent a very significant milestone in the process of transformation of the Dominican justice system.

“I want to thank the Central Government, in the person of President Luis Abinader, and the various institutions and public servants who have made it possible for us to be here today, beginning the realization of this new vision, from the transfer of the land to the completion of the design and its implementation,” said Molina Peña.

President Abinader was accompanied by the governor of Santo Domingo province, Julia Drullard; the mayor of Santo Domingo Oeste, José Andújar; the head prosecutor of Santo Domingo Oeste, Edward López; the general director of the Metropolitan Office of Bus Services (OMSA), Radhamés González; and the Ombudsman, Pablo Ulloa.

Also present were the deputies from Santo Domingo Oeste, Ignacio Aracena, Elías Báez, Luis Rafael Sánchez, and the president of the Justice Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, Alexis Jiménez, as well as the businessman Manuel Estrella, who will be in charge of the construction of the project, in addition to judges from the Supreme Court and the Council of the Judiciary.
