A small plane crashed this Sunday in southwest Virginia, near Washington DC, the capital of the United States, according to local authorities.
A Cessna Citation aircraft crashed around 3:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT) in a "sparsely populated mountainous area" in Virginia, according to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The plane was headed to MacArthur Airport on Long Island, in New York State, and had departed from the city of Elizabethton, in the southern state of Tennessee, the FAA said, adding that it is investigating the causes of the accident.
Meanwhile, the Washington, D.C. Department of Homeland Security, where both the U.S. president's residence and Congress are located, told residents that there is no active threat.
"We are aware of reports from communities in the capital area that heard a loud noise this afternoon," the agency said on its Twitter account.
For now, there is no information on how many people were on board the plane or their condition. Cessna Citation aircraft are business jets with a capacity of up to 12 passengers, according to the company's website.
