SANTO DOMINGO– A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck on Monday afternoon, October 20, 2025, at 3:13 p.m., with its epicenter located 4.8 kilometers northeast of the municipality of Sabana Larga, in the province of San José de Ocoa. The event was confirmed by the National Seismological Center of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo and also reported by VolcanoDiscovery and the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake had an estimated depth of 31.4 kilometers and was felt in several provinces of the country, including Azua, San José de Ocoa, San Cristóbal and Greater Santo Domingo.
According to preliminary data, the earthquake was shallow, which may have contributed to its being felt more intensely in nearby areas. So far, no material damage or injuries have been reported, and authorities are continuing to monitor seismic activity in the region.
The National Seismological Center recommends that the public stay informed through official sources and follow prevention measures in case of aftershocks.
