SANTO DOMINGO.-In 2010 the population of La Altagracia was 273,210 while in 2022 it increased to 446,060, for an annual growth rate of 4.18, which makes it the province with the highest growth in the 12 years preceding the X National Population and Housing Census carried out by the National Statistics Office, (ONE), and whose results were released yesterday Thursday.
This is the only district classified as a province with high growth. It also experienced the greatest increase during the intercensal periods of 1993-2002 and 2002-2010.
La Altagracia is followed by San Cristóbal with a population of 569,930 in 2010 and 688,828 in 2022, a 1.6% increase.
The following rates are considered moderate growth and include:
Monsignor Nouel, (1.4) Hato Mayor, (1.3) La Romana, (1.34) Dajabón, (1.3) Santo Domingo, (1.3) San Pedro de Macorís, (1.25) San José de Ocoa, (1.2) Independencia, (1.20) Peravia, (1.7) El Seibo, (1.3) Valverde, (1.2) Samaná (1.1) and Monte Cristi, (1.0), according to the ONE document.
Santo Domingo, which in 2010 had a population of 2,374,370, reached 2,769,588 in 2022 for an increase of 1.3.
The provinces with the lowest growth are:
Santiago Rodríguez, La Vega, Azua, Bahoruco, Santiago, María Trinidad Sánchez, Monte Plata, Pedernales, Sánchez Ramírez, Barahona, Distrito Nacional, Duarte, San Juan, Puerto Plata, Hermanas Mirabal, Espaillat and Elías Piña.
The general report of the X National Population and Housing Census 2022, establishes that the Dominican Republic has experienced a decrease in its population growth rate, and that the decline in the growth rate was not uniform throughout the country.
The document explains that the average annual growth rate between the 2010 and 2022 censuses was 1.11%, while between 2002 and 2010 it was 1.21%, indicating a slowdown in growth of approximately 8.7% in about 12 years.
Espaillat grew less
Espaillat province stands out as the area with the lowest percentage increase in its population.
According to the ONE, Espaillat has a total of 233,636 inhabitants, which represents an increase of 1,698 people compared to the 2010 census data, equivalent to a growth of 0.73%.
The data reveals that significant differences were observed between the geographical units, allowing the identification of three groups of provinces according to the magnitude of their average annual growth rate.
In 2022, no province had a negative number of people, unlike in 2010 when there were 10, which means that no province has a lower number of people than in 2010.

According to the study, this decline is attributed to the smaller number of members in families.
The Census revealed that, in 2022, the Dominican Republic had a population of 10,760,028. This means that in a decade the population increased by only 1,314,747 people.
The director of the ONE, Miosotis Rivas, explained that this demographic data is due to the fact that the growth rate has consistently decreased since 1950, when it was 3.62%, to a minimum of 1.10% in 2022.
The total population is divided between 5,437,095 women and 5,322,933 men. Men make up 49% of the total population and women 50.5%.
