But, interestingly, the first building that was included in this category opened its doors during the last years of the 19th century and survived in Chicago, United States, until 1931.
However, many hypotheses still exist that support the opposite view. In other words, there are experts who disagree with the idea that the Home Insurance Building should still receive that designation.
Why was the Home Insurance Building the world's first skyscraper?
The Home Insurance Building emerged as a project of architect William Le Baron Jenney, who coordinated the start of construction in 1884 and watched as it was completed in record time, one year later.
The tower quickly acquired the name "skyscraper," although it was not the tallest building in the city, much less in the United States.
So why did it receive this famous mention? Simple! Thanks to its steel structure, combined with reinforced concrete, which was unprecedented in any other building of the same dimensions.
What were the most striking features of the Home Insurance Building?
If the Home Insurance Building were still standing, it would be impossible for Chicago residents and/or tourists to identify it as a skyscraper, given that its original height was 42.1 meters.
In other words, there is a difference of 773.1 meters between this famous 10-story tower, which in 1891 added two more levels and reached a maximum height of 54.9 meters , and the tallest building in the world today (Burj Khalifa)
But this vast distance between history and modernity does not detract from the fact that the first skyscraper had characteristics that made it a very special tower, such as its rectangular base, the ornaments on its cornices, and its enormous windows.
What triggered the demolition of the world's first skyscraper?
As happened in many cities, the passage of time led to the modernization of Chicago's urban center and, as a consequence, to the demolition of the world's first skyscraper.
46 years after the Home Insurance Building opened, city authorities authorized its destruction (along with six other adjacent towers) to build a larger, more modern building on the site: the Field Building.
This new skyscraper, which has survived to the present day, is also known as the “Bank of America Building”, it opened in 1934, has 45 floors and reaches a maximum height of 163.1 meters.
