Let's stop boasting and competing to be "number 1" – in mathematics there aren't that many number 1s. Let's compete to build ourselves as a sector, not as individual islands.
A historic moment unites us
This week marks a milestone for the Dominican Republic: we are hosting the Congress of the Latin American Real Estate Confederation (CILA), and the Internal Real Estate Congress of the Association of Real Estate Agents and Companies (AEI), which brings together the best professionals in the country.
In this context, I share a reflection that can change the way the world perceives us.
The uncomfortable reality we all see
Have you noticed that in every video, in every post, we hear the same thing? "My agency is the best," "we are number 1," "we are the most innovative.".
Here's the hard truth: gentlemen, that doesn't sell. That damages the image of the sector in the eyes of the buyer and the builder or owner.
In my 20 years of experience, I've seen how international and local clients, even international realtors, react when every agent or agency tells them they're "the best." The first question they ask is, "If they're all the best or number one, how do I know which one really is? I've never seen so many number ones in one market."
The problem isn't competition. The problem is competing as individual islands instead of building ourselves up as a sector.
The question that can take us to the next level
Have you ever wondered what happens when a sector truly works together?
Last week, I recalled a conversation with an international developer: "Reyna, what impresses me most about the Dominican real estate market is not the individual agencies, but the professional quality they are achieving as a whole.".
That phrase made me think deeply. What if, instead of individually shouting that we're the best, we collectively demonstrate that we're a world-class sector?
What we have achieved so far
Let us look with pride at what we have built:
- Internationally certified professionals
- Increasingly transparent processes in compliance with the provisions of Law 155-17
- State-of-the-art technology in our operations
- Regional recognition that makes us the headquarters of CILA
- Globally competitive quality standards
Do you know what all these achievements have in common? They weren't achieved by a single agency. We built them as an industry.
The multiplying power of unity
I've seen something fascinating: the sectors that grow exponentially are those where competition elevates everyone, it doesn't destroy them.
Think about it: when one agency implements an innovative process, all the others are motivated to improve. When a professional gets internationally certified, it raises the bar for everyone. That's constructive competition.
The difference lies in the mindset: Do we compete to destroy or do we compete to grow together?
The golden opportunity that lies before us
This congress is not just an event. It is our calling card to Latin America.
The eyes of the region are on us. International construction companies are evaluating us. Local and foreign investors want to know about our capabilities.
What image do we want to project? A fragmented sector where everyone shouts that they are "the best", or a professional, unified industry with world-class standards?
My proposal: The joint growth pact
As a real estate entrepreneur and secretary of the AEI Board of Directors, I propose something that can change our industry:
Instead of competing to be "number 1", let's compete to raise the standards of the entire industry.
Raising service standards:
- Let's share best practices among agencies
- We create quality protocols that benefit all customers
- Let's develop joint certifications that strengthen customer confidence in our industry
Strengthening professionalization:
- Let's promote ongoing sector-specific training
- Let's support the international certification of more colleagues
- Let's build a professional referral network between agencies
Creating shared value:
- Let's develop promotional campaigns for the sector (not just for our individual agencies)
- Let's join forces against regulations that affect us
- Let us present a unified voice to builders, owners, and investors
The lesson that the construction sector teaches us
Have you noticed anything interesting? Large construction companies collaborate with each other when necessary. They share suppliers, refer clients, participate together in international trade fairs, and join forces to improve their industry.
Why? Because they understand that a strong sector benefits all its participants.
If we want the construction sector to see us as strategic partners (not as desperate salespeople clawing each other for exclusives like gladiators), we have to demonstrate that we think like a professional industry, not like adolescent competitors. The strength of the sector is built by opening doors, not closing them on other colleagues.
The perfect time for change
This congress provides us with the perfect opportunity to begin a new era of professional collaboration.
Imagine the message we can send:
- Dominican Republic: CILA headquarters due to the quality of its unified real estate sector
- Professionals who support each other to achieve international standards
- An industry that attracts investment because it generates collective trust
Don't you think it's more powerful than continuing to fight for individual titles?
My personal commitment
As an educator, real estate attorney, author of "Real Estate from a Legal Perspective," and a professional with 20 years of experience, I am committed to:
- Continue sharing legal knowledge that benefits the entire sector
- Continue collaborating on sales with other colleagues
- Support collective training initiatives
- Promote the image of the Dominican real estate sector internationally
Will you join this commitment?
The call to action
Many might say, "Oh, Reyna's dreaming," and even laugh. But isn't that exactly what we tell our clients? "If you dream of owning your own home, I can help you achieve it.".
Well then, since we help people make their dreams come true, let's all unite to fulfill the dream of having a more united, more respectful, and stronger sector.
If we can make other people's real estate dreams come true, we can make the dream of a prosperous sector for everyone a reality.
Let's use this congress to officially launch a new era of professional collaboration.
Over the next few months, commit to doing one thing differently:
Instead of promoting only your agency as "the best" or "number one," promote the entire Dominican real estate sector. Talk about us as an industry. Present your achievements as part of collective growth.
Ask yourself right now: Do you prefer to be the best fish in a small fishbowl, or to be part of the ocean of opportunities we can create together?
My conviction is clear: united we not only grow, we shine.
And when our industry shines, all of us who are part of it will shine too. May this congress mark the beginning of a new era for our sector. An era where unity leads us to conquer markets we never imagined reaching.
Together we are unstoppable. Together we are the future of Latin American real estate.
