SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican tourism started the year with a historic record in arrivals, reaching 1,155,484 visitors in the month of January, surpassing 2019 by 53%, 2023 by 22% and 2024 by 8%.
This was reported by the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, when he presented the results of the industry's performance this Wednesday at a hotel in the capital.
He said that the country received 759,929 tourists by air in January, while 395,555 cruise ship passengers arrived by sea.
“When we add those two figures together, we get the great number: 1,155,484 visitors, breaking our own records from previous years,” Collado said.
The main countries of origin for tourists in January were the United States with 36%, Canada with 25%, Argentina with 8%, Colombia with 5% and France with 3%, the official said.
He also reported that Punta Cana airport continues to receive the largest number of tourists (63%), followed by Las Américas with 19%, Cibao with 9%, and Puerto Plata with 7%.

Collado reiterated that 2025 will be a better year for Dominican tourism, thanks to the alliance between the public and private sectors.
He indicated that priority will be given to continuing to improve air connectivity, which will guarantee more tourist arrivals.

Collado took the opportunity to offer some details of the Dominican Republic's participation in the ANATO Tourism Showcase, which will take place in Bogotá, Colombia, from the 26th to the 28th of this month.
Juan Bancalari, president of ASONAHORES, agreed with Collado that this will be an extraordinary year for the sector.
He also highlighted the effectiveness of the public-private partnership, and the work of the MITUR team in achieving successful results and the records that the tourism industry has been exhibiting month after month.
He also highlighted the success achieved by the Dominican Republic in its recent participation in the FITUR 2025 tourism fair, which took place in Madrid, Spain.
Hotel occupancy during the month of January was 82%, while the average stay for foreigners was 9 days.
