Collado revealed that in the tourism sector alone, the government has invested more than one billion pesos in the province of Samaná, in its effort to strengthen the development of the sector throughout the area.
SANTA BÁRBARA, SAMANÁ –The Malecón Project, presented in this region this past weekend by President Luis Abinader and Minister of Tourism David Collado, aims to enhance the province's tourism offerings and positively impact the community of the main municipality. The project is estimated to cost RD$449,000,000.
In explaining the project, authorities said that its objective is to improve the stormwater drainage conditions of the Santa Barbara boardwalk by increasing the capacity of the conduits that connect the town's river and the Panchita ravine to the ocean.
The town's river and the Panchita ravine are the main waterways that carry rainwater from the municipality. Abinader and Collado emphasized the importance of the project, which will have a significant impact on the main municipality and contribute to improving the view of the Santa Bárbara waterfront.
The president said that the entire process of renovating the Santa Bárbara boardwalk will give a great boost to tourism, which will have a direct impact on the economy of the municipality and the entire province of Samaná.

“Today we are here addressing a long-standing demand from the municipality of Santa Bárbara and sending a clear message that we will spare no effort to ensure that this tourist destination reaches its highest level,” said Minister Collado.
What the project entails
The project will improve drainage conditions by replacing three (3) existing 60″ diameter Rib-Loc pipes with a six (6) rectangular reinforced concrete culvert, each 4.30 m wide and 1.65 m high. This will increase the water flow capacity from 20.31 m³/s to 107.70 m³/s, 5.3 times the current capacity.
Another important project is the construction of a double-section concrete box culvert, approximately 150 meters long, which will connect the Panchita ravine from Rosa Duarte Street to the waterfront. Six additional sections of pipe will also be replaced with concrete culverts to increase drainage capacity.
In addition to the aforementioned works, the sanitation of more than 500 linear meters of the town's river and the Panchita ravine stands out, which will consist of the removal of mud, solid waste and sediments, reshaping of the sections and enclosure of some sections, to widen the sections of the channels and improve the water conduits.
To prevent the impact of solid waste on the coast when it rains, two traps or screening structures will be built to retain or intercept the waste before it reaches the coast.
A dredging of 10,000 m2 will also be carried out on approximately 200 linear meters of coastline in order to remove sediments accumulated by dragging and improve the discharge of rainwater into the ocean.
