Starting Monday, June 9th of this year, at 12:01 am, a group of countries will not be allowed to enter the United States, according to a document released yesterday, June 4th, by the White House, which imposes restrictions as a way to "curb terrorism".
"After evaluating a report submitted by the Secretary of State, in coordination with other officials, President Trump has determined that entry for citizens of certain countries must be restricted to protect national security and the best public interests," the statement said.
He adds that "it is the sacred duty of the president to take action to ensure that those seeking to enter our country will not harm Americans ."
The countries affected by the total ban are: Afghanistan, Burma (Myanmar), Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti , Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Partial restrictions will also be imposed on citizens of seven other countries: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
According to the report, Haitian citizens overstayed their B1/B2 visa 31.38 percent of the time, and F, M and J visas 25.05 percent of the time.
Additionally, hundreds of thousands of undocumented Haitians " flooded the United States during Joe Biden's administration . This impacts American communities , creating risks of overstaying, the establishment of criminal networks, and other security threats."
Currently, it is estimated that more than 600,000 Haitians reside in the United States, mainly concentrated in Florida, New York, and New Jersey.
Many of them arrived after the 2010 earthquake and have contributed significantly to the US economy in sectors such as construction, health, and services.
The proclamation only affects those who do not have a valid visa issued before June 9, so Haitians who have a valid visa and are not subject to inadmissibility for another aspect of lawwill be able to enter the United States.
It is implied that there will be no renewal or issuance of visas to Haitian citizens once the presidential decree comes into effect.
