The Eduardo León Jimenes Cultural Center, located in Santiago de los Caballeros, is one of the most important and influential cultural institutions in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean region.
Since its opening, the institution has received nearly 2.3 million visitors, who have enjoyed its cultural offerings designed to become an experience that lasts throughout the life of each participant.
The genesis of the Centro León dates back to the first edition of the Don Eduardo León Jimenes Art Competition in 1964. In his award speech that year, Don Eduardo León predicted the need for a space for the arts in the Dominican Republic.
As the centenary of the founding of the León Jimenes companies approached, the seven León Asensio brothers honored the memory of their parents by giving Santiago and the country a cultural center and a radio station with the best of Dominican culture.
Official statistics published in April 2023 by the National Statistics Office (ONE) show that the Centro León ranks second among the ten most visited museums in the country.
The institution officially opened its doors on October 3, 2003, to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the business life of the León Jimenes Group.
The work was designed by the prestigious Dominican architect Pedro José Borrell of the firm Arquitectura del Sol.
They worked on a 20,000-square-meter plot of land, 9,000 of which comprise a two-story building. It is a space designed to stimulate creativity, education, and recreation. It features an auditorium equipped for diverse events with a capacity of 200 people.
For its inauguration, the commemorative exhibition entitled Footprint and Memory. Eduardo León Jimenes: A Century on the National Road (1903-2023) was displayed, on the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the La Aurora cigar factory in 1903 by Don Eduardo León Jiménes.
The Visual Arts Collection comprises the history of the Eduardo León Jiménes Art Competition and an overview of the creative drive of the 20th century.
Meanwhile, the Anthropological Collection offers objects that symbolize everyday artistic, religious and artisanal manifestations dating from 4,000 BC to the present 21st century.
The Bibliographic Collection brings together the entire trajectory of cultural bibliography and the Media Library makes available to art and culture, teachers and artists all the topics related to their concerns.
The National Book Fair Award is an award that has been given uninterruptedly and annually since 1997, within the framework of the celebration of the Santo Domingo International Book Fair.
The Eduardo León Cultural Center is not just a cultural institution, but a beacon of the national soul. Thanks to its efforts, new generations of Dominicans are learning to cherish and protect the values of our identity.
