SANTO DOMINGO.- The sit-in that a group of engineers had called for the second time for today, November 1st, in front of the Ministry of Finance headquarters, on Avenida México, corner of Pedro A. Lluberes, was canceled because Minister Jochi Vicente has placed them on the agenda for tomorrow, Wednesday, at ten in the morning.
"We confirm the appointment to receive you at the Ministry of Finance next Wednesday at 10:00 AM (tomorrow)," says the email sent to the Codiano Institutional Committee (CIC), signed by Derby De los Santos, Deputy Minister of the Treasury.
The Codians had called for a protest to demand that the Government pay them 385 million pesos that it owes them as contractors.
First stand
The first demonstration in front of the Treasury building took place on October 11th, where the protesters were promised that Minister Jochi Vicente would meet with them during the week of October 17th to 21st to listen to their concerns and find a possible solution to their demands
The group of contractors has held a series of demonstrations trying to get the Luis Abinader government to respond to their demand for payment of the debt the State owes to engineers, architects, and small construction companies, but so far they have not received a response from government officials.
Regarding the case
These are 107 construction professionals who are demanding that the Government pay them 385 million pesos that the State owes them for services rendered, in their role as contractors.
The plaintiffs state that this is a commitment made by the Dominican State 26 years ago for works carried out in twelve government institutions. They assert that these works were formally contracted, constructed, measured, properly supervised, and put into service since 1996.
“New governments assume the assets and liabilities of their predecessors. That is why we are requesting that the government headed by President Luis Abinader Corona fulfill the oath it took before the nation to respect and enforce the Constitution and the laws,” they state in a document.
They maintain that an abuse of power is being committed against them, because the sacred constitutional principle of the State is being violated. “Article 38 of our Constitution regarding respect for human dignity is also being violated; Law 3143 on work performed but not paid for and Law 340-06 on Purchase and Contracting are being violated.”.
In their repeated requests, they earnestly ask the president to begin the payment process in order to put an end to "a quarter of a century of suffering and disregard, family disintegrations and deaths of which we have been victims at the hands of the nefarious previous governments.".
According to their information, the cases have been filed with the Ministry of Finance, so their fight will now be taken to that government agency.
