SANTO DOMINGO.- A total of 23 new routes, operated by seven airlines, will allow for more and better flight options for all passengers and tourists from major cities in the Americas and Europe, announced Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) today, highlighting that it has registered a record number of new flight routes this year.
“We are delighted to see the continued growth in flights and passengers at our airports, led by Las Américas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez (AILA-JFPG). This record is possible thanks to the strong and ongoing support we receive from all the authorities,” said Mónika Infante Henríquez, CEO of Aerodom.
A press release indicates that of the 23 new routes registered for this year, nine have already begun operations: Santo Domingo–Medellín with Wingo; Puerto Plata–Frankfurt with Eurowings Discover; Santo Domingo and Samaná–Madrid with Plus Ultra; Santo Domingo–Caracas and Maracaibo with Rutaca; and Santo Domingo–Barranquilla and Cartagena with Air Century.
The remaining 14 new routes, Aerodom says, are projected to begin flights between September and October, and will connect Santo Domingo with Mexico City, Cancun and Monterrey in Mexico; Cali, Barranquilla and Cartagena in Colombia; Lima in Peru; San Jose in Costa Rica; Aruba, El Salvador, Saint Maarten, Curaçao and Guatemala, together with Arajet; as well as Panama City together with Wingo.
Regarding air traffic
In terms of traffic, the document indicates that from January to July 2022, the airports operated by Aerodom received more passengers than in the same period of 2019 before the pandemic. To date, Aerodom has handled 3.4 million passengers, representing a 9.3% increase compared to the total number of passengers in 2019.
“We are convinced that the significant development of routes will support the growth of passenger traffic. We are working to increase the number of boarding gates at AILA-JFPG, with the vision of transforming our airport into a new regional hub that provides new opportunities for launching more routes to multiple destinations,” Infante added.
Recently, he indicated, Aerodom made an investment of more than 1 billion pesos in the AILA-JFPG, to expand and renovate the central atrium of the passenger terminal, which now has a new and varied commercial offer, including a better gastronomic experience for the enjoyment of users.
Additionally, the project included the relocation and modernization of security and immigration services, with the aim of streamlining processes, allowing for faster border procedures, shortening waiting times to guarantee passengers a better experience when departing abroad.
Likewise, the first phase of the repair and remodeling work on the runway of the Gregorio Luperón International Airport (AIGL), in Puerto Plata, was completed, with an investment of more than 270 million pesos.
AILA-JFPG is the Dominican Republic's main airport due to its location and ranks second in the country in terms of regular passenger traffic. Aerodom also operates Gregorio Luperón International Airport, Presidente Juan Bosch International Airport in Samaná, and Joaquín Balaguer International Airport in Santo Domingo Norte.
