SANTO DOMINGO. – Within the framework of the first Congress of the Association of Builders of Santo Domingo East (Acosde), under the motto “Vision that Builds Strategic Leadership”, specialists Milagros De Camps and Yermys Peña agreed that sustainability and innovation are essential pillars to generate long-term value in the construction sector and in the future of that municipality.
De Camps, a lawyer and specialist in climate change, energy and sustainability, emphasized that investing in energy efficiency should not be seen as an expense, but as a competitive advantage.
“Investing in energy efficiency can reduce operating costs by up to 30%. Innovation is a growth lever that not only improves business operations but also generates tangible benefits for users and customers,” he stated, citing the progress of companies like Cepem and Ever-go in implementing smart solutions and prepaid energy models that allow for consumption planning and cost reduction.
He emphasized that although the construction of smart buildings in the country is still in its early stages, international figures demonstrate the potential of this transformation in the region.
For her part, architect and businesswoman Yermys Peña, CEO of Studio YP and Construger, called for a rethinking of the urban development model in Santo Domingo Este, with a vision that transcends the construction of square meters.
“The true legacy isn’t the square footage built, it’s giving people back time to live better in their own city,” Peña said. “Santo Domingo Este can no longer be a bedroom community; it must become a destination city with its own identity,” he added.
Peña presented five strategic pillars to achieve that goal: mixed-use projects that bring housing, work, and services closer together; smart homes that reduce electricity costs; architectural solutions against flooding; signature buildings that add value; and high-impact public spaces that reinforce urban identity.
The sustainable construction specialist also highlighted the importance of attracting international chain hotels, service centers, and iconic projects that will reposition Santo Domingo Este as a competitive investment and tourism destination.
In their speeches, both De Camps and Peña agreed that the key to the future, whether in business operations or urban development, lies in smart and sustainable projects that reduce costs, improve the quality of life, and increase the country's competitiveness.
