SANTO DOMINGO –The prolonged power outage of more than nine hours that occurred last Sunday at the Las Américas International Airport José Francisco Peña Gómez, affecting more than 40 flights, generated a reaction yesterday, Monday, from various leaders, including President Luis Abinader, who described the event as “totally unacceptable,” after warning that, if negligence is confirmed, “there will be consequences.”
The president explained that he spoke with the Minister of Public Works, Eduardo Estrella, who convened the Airport Authority Council and the Port Department to thoroughly investigate the causes of the electrical failure that affected the country's main airport.
“Situations like that are unacceptable to our government , and if there was negligence, there will be consequences,” the head of state reiterated during his participation in La Semanal con la Prensa.
For his part, the president of the People's Force (FP), Leonel Fernández, lamented the prolonged blackout, considering that it constitutes serious damage to the country's image before the international community.
The former president described the incident at the airport terminal as a painful blow to the country's reputation.

The president of the Airport Commission and Minister of Public Works, Eduardo Estrella, reported that they will meet to learn “in detail” the report that contains the causes of the electrical failures recorded in recent days at the Las Américas International Airport (AILA).
Estrella announced through a social media post that the meeting scheduled for this Tuesday will allow “establishing the level of responsibility of Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), the concessionary company in charge of managing this air bridge until 2060, after it was extended in 2023 by the Government of President Luis Abinader.
“In my capacity as president of the Airport Commission, we have convened the members of this body for tomorrow, with the purpose of learning in detail the report of the technicians of the Airport Department on the failure that occurred in the electrical system of the Las Américas International Airport and to establish the level of responsibility of the concessionary company AERODOM,” Estrella said through a publication on his X account.
