SANTO DOMINGO. Today marks the start of winter baseball in the country, signaling the return of one of the most anticipated sporting traditions of the year. The stadiums that will host the games not only welcome fans but also hold decades of history, renovations, and events that have defined professional baseball in the Dominican Republic.
Quisqueya Stadium
It was inaugurated in 1955 as Estadio Trujillo. Years later, it was officially renamed Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal, in honor of the former Major League Baseball player and Hall of Famer. It has hosted ten Caribbean Series: 1972, 1976, 1980, 1988, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2012, 2016, and 2022. It is the only stadium that is home to two major teams: the Tigres del Licey and the Leones del Escogido.
Cibao Stadium
It opened its doors in 1958 in Santiago de los Caballeros. In 1974, it was expanded with bleachers behind the outfield. In 2007, it was renovated to host the 2008 Caribbean Series, the only edition held at this ballpark. In 2014, a fire damaged the suites, offices, and press rooms. Repairs were completed that same month, just before the start of the season.
Tetelo Vargas Stadium
Located in San Pedro de Macorís, it was inaugurated in 1959, originally as Estadio Oriental. In 1963, it was renamed by Congress in honor of Tetelo Vargas. Structural improvements were made in 2007, and a complete renovation was carried out in 2010. Although it has not hosted the Caribbean Series, it has witnessed important moments in the local tournament.
These stadiums not only host games but also represent the development of Dominican baseball. Their architectural evolution and their role in international events solidify them as pillars of the national sport. With each season, they renew their prominence and remain an essential part of the winter calendar.
Tonight's action begins with three matchups: Gigantes del Cibao face Águilas Cibaeñas at Estadio Cibao; Estrellas Orientales host Toros del Este at Estadio Tetelo Vargas; and Leones del Escogido take on Tigres del Licey at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal. All games are scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.
