SANTO DOMINGO- The Board of Directors of the Official Chamber of Commerce of Spain in the Dominican Republic (CAMACOES RD) held a meeting with President Abinader in which it reaffirmed its firm commitment to continue strengthening the ties of collaboration, promotion and investment between the Dominican Republic and Spain.
According to Paco Pérez, president of CAMACOES RD, Spanish investment has played a fundamental role in the economic development of the Dominican Republic, evolving from an early commercial influence to being the world's leading investor in the country's tourism sector , with a sustained growth trend in other sectors such as renewable energy.
According to data from the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, in 2024 Spain was the second largest source of Foreign Direct Investment to the Dominican Republic for the second consecutive year, second only to the US, with investment amounting to 1.126 billion dollars, reflecting an increase of nearly 70% compared to 2023 - which was already a record year - and representing almost 25% of total foreign direct investment flows in the DR.
The main sectors receiving Spanish investment in the Dominican Republic were accommodation services, construction, infrastructure, real estate, agriculture, livestock, financial services, food and beverage services, and electricity supply.
“The focus on the tourism sector and diversification into renewable energy and other sectors has ensured Spanish companies a central place in the country’s FDI structure. Spain’s role has also been significant in bilateral tradeduring this period. Since 2000, trade between the two countries has continued to expand,” Paco Pérez emphasized.
In this process, CAMACOES RD has established itself as a key player in promoting bilateral trade and supporting businesses. "Over the past century, Spanish companies have created jobs, transferred technology, and improved working conditions in the country. Currently, they remain committed to the country's growth and modernization, contributing from their position to fostering a favorable investment environment.".
