It was the 90s. On the radio station La Nota Diferente, the song “Aves de paso” by the Spanish singer, composer and poet Joaquín Sabina was playing; a voice that captivated the mind and heart of a young Dominican who immediately identified with his lyrics and the way he dealt with everyday life, a boy who from an early age was aware of social problems and the importance of living a life in peace and harmony.
Freddy de la Rosa - also known by his stage name Freddy Sabina - founded 10 years ago a time capsule dedicated to those people who not only seek, but enjoy and yearn for a good atmosphere, a pleasant space where they can talk about the world, meet new people, fall in love, be... and that place is Sabina Bar, located at 206 Isabel La Católica Street, Colonial City.
As soon as you open its doors and observe its rectangular shape, about 80 square meters, you can feel how all the encounters, the memories created, the stories told, envelop you in a bubble of intimacy, and take you to another time.
The decor of Sabina Bar is inspired by an Irish pub: abundant wood, which allows creating a cozy atmosphere; the lamps - which used to be gas and are now light bulbs - hang from the ceiling dimly illuminating the space; the back wall is made of bricks (just like it was in the first bar where Sabina sang, La Mandrágora, in Madrid); the rest of the walls or "walls of temptation", as Freddy calls them, painted in ochre tones, are full of photographs of Sabina and decorated with the signatures of all the customers who have come to enjoy themselves, souvenirs from the countries that De la Rosa has visited, his CD collection, paintings and photographs of local artists such as José Cestero and Luis Días, El Terror.
De la Rosa has always been a champion of local talent, from painting and photography to music, and so, one or two days a week, emerging artists perform for the public's enjoyment. He has also lent his space for events, talks on mental health, business meetings, and even weddings, with the sole condition that the doors remain open for customers who want to stop by for one of his famous mojitos or a gin and tonic.
A perfect place to go when you want something quiet, without bright lights or loud music. A space to share, listen to music with substance, social messages, and alternatives to the everyday… A friendly bar where everyone who enters for the first time, returns.
